Start with the currency on the bill
The official currency is the Turkish lira (TRY). Before agreeing to a hotel, excursion or transfer price, ask which currency will actually be charged. Keep the agreed amount and currency together in your booking record.

If a business gives you two prices, convert both into your home currency and include the payment fees. Do not treat a euro price as equivalent to the lira price without doing the calculation. Recheck the rate near payment time instead of using an old screenshot.
Current lira and older banknotes
Türkiye removed six zeros with the 2005 New Turkish lira issue; the E9 group followed in 2009. Do not interpret the large face value on an old collectible note as today’s spending money. Use the central bank’s issue history to identify it.

Record unpaid accommodation and your daily spending in TRY. Put a flight or tour in one-off costs instead of multiplying it by days. If part of your booking is genuinely payable in another currency, create a separate budget stop or record and avoid adding its days twice to the itinerary.

Should I budget in euro or lira?
Use TRY for lira expenses. Keep a separately agreed foreign-currency bill in its actual billing currency.
Does a weaker lira guarantee a cheaper trip?
No. Your cost also depends on the local prices and fees you actually pay. Compare current booking totals.
Can I use old notes with six extra zeros?
Do not assume they are current money. Check the central bank’s historical issue information and applicable redemption rules.
