Europe and the euro area are not the same
Euro banknotes and coins are used in the euro area. Check each destination against the ECB’s membership list; an itinerary in Europe can still include non-euro currencies.
ECB · euro-area countries and currency →One currency does not mean one price level
You can keep euro-denominated expenses in EUR across euro-area borders. Still budget accommodation and transport separately for each destination: the same unit of money does not imply the same prices.
Check payment arrangements locally
Before booking, check how each accommodation provider and transport operator takes payment. Keep the confirmation with your itinerary. This regional guide does not assume a single card, cash or ticketing policy across all destinations.
Add non-euro stops as separate legs
If your trip also includes Poland, Switzerland or the UK, use PLN, CHF or GBP on those rows. Convert all legs to your home currency in the full planner instead of adding amounts in different currencies.
At the payment screen
If offered conversion into your home currency, compare its rate and markup with your card terms. Choosing local currency avoids that particular conversion service.
Visa · currency-conversion choices →Before you leave
- Verify the currency of every stop, including airport transfers.
- Record unpaid bookings separately for each country.
- Compare conversion costs if your card account is not in EUR.
- Check transport tickets and payment methods with each local operator.
Your own travel budget
Enter your planned daily spending in the destination currency. The total is daily spending × days; it is not a recommended allowance. Add unpaid accommodation and transport if they are not included. Fees and inflation are excluded.
Enter daily spending from 0 to 1,000,000, using a decimal point, and 1 to 365 whole days. Choose a supported home currency.
Enter your own daily amount to calculate a total.

Practical questions
Do all European countries use euros?
No. Consult the ECB’s euro-area list and check the currency of each stop.
Do I need to exchange euros again between euro-area countries?
No currency conversion is needed merely because you cross between two euro-area countries. Your purchases and other fees still depend on the provider.
Can my card still have charges when I pay in euros?
Check your card terms, including whether your account is in EUR and any applicable provider fees. This site’s reference conversion excludes those costs.
