Thailand travel money: cash, cards, ATMs and budget
Plan baht spending across cities, islands and arrival transport. Separate card purchases from the cash you actually need, and compare withdrawal costs before accepting a machine’s offer.

Cash backup for a Thailand itinerary
Budget in Thai baht (THB). Check payment acceptance with your accommodation and tour operators before departure. Keep arrival transport and small purchases in a separate cash allowance so that one failed card payment does not interrupt the first day.

Before confirming, record the withdrawal amount, operator fee and offered conversion. Add your own bank’s charges. A quoted operator fee is not the entire cost. Use the withdrawal calculator to see how repeating a fixed charge affects the same total cash budget.
Paper and polymer baht notes
The Bank of Thailand lists polymer 20, 50 and 100 baht notes alongside the Series 17 information. Compare the actual denomination and design in its guide rather than deciding whether a note is genuine just from its material.

Create a stop for each part of the itinerary. Enter accommodation, food, local transport and activities as daily group costs. Add flights, ferries or a prepaid excursion only once, and avoid counting paid bookings again. Download a reference-rate card before travelling away from a connection.

If offered conversion into your home currency, compare its rate and markup with your card terms. Choosing local currency avoids that particular conversion service.

Practical questions
Does every business accept my foreign card?
Do not assume so. Ask the particular business and keep a backup way to pay.
How many baht should I withdraw?
Add the cash-only items in your itinerary. Compare withdrawal charges and limits before deciding; there is no single suitable amount for every trip.
Are polymer baht notes unusual?
The official Bank of Thailand guide includes polymer notes. Use that guide to identify the issue and security features.
