Keep your budget in forint
Hungary’s currency is the forint (HUF). Visit Hungary describes card and ATM options for visitors. Confirm acceptance at the business you plan to use; a card logo on an ATM does not tell you what your issuer will charge.

Forint amounts can look large compared with euro amounts. Enter the full price in HUF, then convert. Check the currency code and the total on the terminal before confirming, especially when splitting a restaurant or accommodation bill.
Recognise the current denominations
The MNB guide lists banknotes from 500 to 20,000 forint. Its redesigned series was introduced between 2014 and 2019. If you have older notes, compare the design with the official guide rather than relying only on the denomination.

Can I assume a euro price is better?
No. Compare the final HUF and EUR costs after conversion and fees.
What should I do with an older banknote?
Find its issue in the MNB guide and follow the current exchange instructions. Do not assume a shop must accept it.
