Use AUD, not an unspecified dollar amount
Australia uses Australian dollars. Its banknotes have five denominations: AUD 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100. The Reserve Bank of Australia provides the official banknote information. Check the currency code when booking from abroad, especially if a website offers to display prices in your home currency. Compare final totals in the same currency before choosing an offer.

Tourism Australia lists major card networks used in Australia and explains that tipping is generally not expected, although it can be offered for good service. Check acceptance with the particular provider you intend to use. For a longer driving route, confirm payment options at planned stops and keep a practical backup. As checked on 22 September 2026, the ACCC says Visa, Mastercard, American Express and eftpos are introducing no-surcharge rules from 1 October 2026 for the covered card payments. This is a dated change, so use the linked ACCC guidance for the applicable position when you travel. A merchant surcharge and your own issuer’s currency-conversion fee are different costs; review your card tariff separately.

For cash withdrawals, find your issuer’s fixed and percentage fees and the operator charge shown by the ATM. Enter the cash amount you need in AUD and your card’s conversion rate in the withdrawal calculator. Compare one withdrawal with several without increasing the total cash budget. The result does not model all fee tiers or allowances and does not decide how much cash is comfortable for you to carry.
Separate city stays, transport and prepaid bookings
Create separate stops if daily costs change along the route. Include whole-group accommodation and food once, and record one-off flights, excursions or rental payments in the one-off field. Paid bookings stay in the total costs and are also entered as already paid. The optional reserve applies to the unpaid part. Divide the remaining amount between cash and card payments and save the plan explicitly before leaving the page.

Practical questions
Is an Australian dollar the same as a US dollar?
No. Use AUD for Australian prices and choose USD only as your home currency if that is the currency you want to compare with.
Does removal of a merchant surcharge remove my card’s exchange fee?
Do not assume so. Check the merchant’s payment total and your own issuer’s conversion charges separately.
Does the offline card need mobile data?
The downloaded HTML card works without a connection and makes no remote requests. Its stored rate does not update until you download a new card.
