Japan travel budget: how exchange rates changed a fixed yen budget in September 2026

A reproducible study of the reference cost of JPY 150,000 in USD, EUR and GBP, using the same recorded dates.

Calculations and editorial explanation: currency-converter.live. Published 2026-10-02. This report preserves its fixed data capture; the live tools use the currently available archive.

A fixed unpaid budget, not a suggested holiday price

We use JPY 150,000 solely as an illustrative amount still to be paid. Local prices do not change, there are no paid bookings, no reserve and no fees. This is not an estimate of the cost of a holiday in Japan. Scaling the amount scales every result proportionally.

The same yen budget, three home currencies

24 matching observations out of 30 UTC calendar dates (2026-09-01–2026-09-30). 6 dates have no complete quote for this comparison. The longest interval between retained dates is 3 days.

What the recorded data tells us

USD: Between the first and last matching observations, the reference cost changed by 13.87 USD (1.48%). Across the recorded dates, the difference between the lowest and highest costs was 41.39 USD.

EUR: Between the first and last matching observations, the reference cost changed by 32.03 EUR (3.96%). Across the recorded dates, the difference between the lowest and highest costs was 35.50 EUR.

GBP: Between the first and last matching observations, the reference cost changed by 27.19 GBP (3.92%). Across the recorded dates, the difference between the lowest and highest costs was 29.97 GBP.

A fixed yen amount can move differently in USD, EUR and GBP because both the yen and the home currency affect the cross rate. The first-to-last comparison and the full observed range answer different questions; neither shows what a traveller actually paid.

Putting the movement beside an explicit fee example

Illustrative example only: from a total USD 1,000 budget, a USD 10 fixed fee plus 2% of the full budget consumes USD 30. USD 970 remains to exchange. The rate would need to increase by about 3.09% to deliver the same destination amount as a fee-free USD 1,000 exchange at the original rate. This is arithmetic using entered assumptions, not a bank offer or a recommendation to wait.

Method and limitations

For each retained UTC date, cost in the home currency = 150,000 × the archived USD value of one JPY ÷ the archived USD value of one home-currency unit. We retain the latest recorded row for that date and require all four currencies to be present, finite and positive. No missing value is filled, no current-day value is used and the mean weights each retained date equally.

These are observations in the currency-converter.live reference archive, combining earlier imported values and service snapshots. Full row-level upstream provenance was not retained for every older entry. The data is not an exchange closing-price series. The September capture contains no recorded quote for six dates; the reported extrema cover only retained observations, not all possible market or retail prices.

We hold the local amount constant. The calculations omit exchange spreads, provider fees, interest, inflation, settlement timing and actual card debits. A daily sampled range cannot identify the best hour, predict a future rate or prove that waiting would help.

Download and reproduce the calculation

In the JSON file, each row starts with a Unix timestamp in milliseconds, followed by the USD value per currency unit in the order shown by codes. Null means unavailable. The CSV contains only dates with complete observations and unrounded calculated costs. Displayed values are rounded for readability.
