Swedish Krona (SEK) — currency guide

Read Swedish krona amounts in SEK, compare them with PLN, USD or another chosen currency, and identify the current banknote designs. If you have cash left from an older visit, check the issue and the Riksbank’s dated redemption rules before using it.

What will I actually receive?

Use your provider quote and the fees you know to estimate how much arrives.

Budget mode uses the source budget; target mode uses the desired receipt. The target never replaces the main converter amount.

Both fees are deducted from the source budget before conversion. The percentage applies to the whole source budget.

Enter your provider’s rate to calculate.

Enter your provider quote. The reference rate is not an offer. Unentered intermediary or recipient charges are excluded.

Source budget and fixed fee: up to 1,000,000,000 each. No fees are assumed beyond those entered.

History and milestones

  1. 1873

    Sweden adopts the krona

The Riksbank dates the introduction of the krona to 1873, when Sweden adopted the gold standard. Its history explains the currency unit and the gold-based exchange-rate framework of the time.

  2. 1992

The krona is allowed to float

On 19 November 1992 Sweden abandoned the fixed exchange rate and allowed the krona to float. This is a historical change of regime, not a prediction of future currency movements.

  3. 2015

A new series and a new denomination

On 1 October the Riksbank began issuing new 20, 50, 200 and 1,000-krona banknotes. The 200-krona note was a new denomination.

  4. 2016

    New 100 and 500-krona notes

The second stage began on 3 October, when the Riksbank introduced new 100 and 500-krona banknotes.

  5. 2016–2017

    Earlier designs lose validity

The older 20, 50 and 1,000-krona designs became invalid after 30 June 2016. The older 100 and 500-krona designs became invalid after 30 June 2017.

  6. 2027

    Announced change to redemption rules

Under the rules checked on 12 October 2026, the Riksbank must receive applications for the older invalid banknotes by 30 June 2027. From 1 July 2027 it will not redeem notes that have been invalid for more than ten years. Check the current instructions before applying.

Find your banknote

Choose a denomination and series. This guide covers circulating designs and selected older series, not every collector variant.

Match the denomination, series and motif, then open the issuer’s actual design and security guide.

11 of 11 reviewed designs

Only the listed series and motifs are reviewed here; print variants and full banknote history are not catalogued. A matching design does not confirm authenticity. Inspect security features using the issuer’s guide.

Issuer sources checked: 2026-10-12. Check the linked current conditions before requesting redemption.

Six current banknote denominations

The Riksbank lists current notes of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 kronor. Use the denomination and the pictured design together; a number alone does not identify the issue.

Tilt, inspect and compare the right design

The official guide explains colour-shifting images, watermarks and raised print. Match the exact note to the issuer’s illustrations and inspect more than one feature. A colour or size match alone is not an authenticity check.

Older designs cannot be used for payments

The withdrawn designs in the Riksbank’s invalid-note catalogue can no longer be spent. Compare both sides with the official catalogue before treating older travel cash as usable money.

Check the redemption fee and deadline

As checked on 12 October 2026, the Riksbank’s redemption fee is SEK 300, deducted from the amount returned. Applications must arrive by 30 June 2027 and are assessed under its conditions. Read the current process before sending cash.

Keep cash planning separate from the exchange quote

Enter planned costs in SEK and choose a home currency in the trip planner. A reference conversion does not include your card or ATM charges and does not determine which payment methods a particular business accepts. Confirm those details with the provider.

Practical questions

Is SEK the same currency as NOK?

No. SEK identifies the Swedish krona; NOK identifies the Norwegian krone. A price marked only “kr” needs a country or currency code before you convert it.

How do I read SEK/PLN and USD/SEK?

SEK/PLN gives Polish zloty per one Swedish krona. USD/SEK gives Swedish kronor per one US dollar. Reverse a pair when you want the value of one unit in the other direction.

Can I use banknotes saved before the 2015–2017 changeover?

Check the exact design. The Riksbank’s invalid-note list includes the earlier 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000-krona issues; those designs are no longer valid for payments. The current notes with the same values are different issues.

Can a visitor apply to redeem invalid Swedish notes?

The Riksbank publishes instructions for tourists and foreign citizens, including a form for applicants without BankID. If approved, redemption can be paid into a foreign bank account. Check its current fee, deadline and documentation requirements before posting notes.

How can I compare two offers to exchange SEK?

Choose the same currency direction and total source budget for both offers. Enter each quoted rate and the applicable fees in the offer calculator. Our displayed reference rate is not a provider’s executable quote.
