Cash or card in Japan?

Card payments are available, but a card-only plan can fail. JNTO recommends cash as a backup when overseas cards do not work. Before a small purchase or a trip away from major visitor areas, check the payment methods.

Choose an ATM by published conditions

Match your card logo to an operator’s published list, then check the machine’s hours, limit and final fee disclosure. The reviewed operator table below separates known limits, conditional charges and missing information; your card issuer can impose additional restrictions.

Japan ATMs: foreign-card rules

Compare published card logos, withdrawal ceilings and operator charges at three reviewed networks. Add your cash plan to estimate a minimum withdrawal count where the applicable limit is known.

Operator sources checked: 2026-10-28. Confirm the conditions on the operator page and ATM screen before withdrawing.

Seven Bank has a lower magnetic-stripe ceiling. Leave the method unspecified if you are unsure.

Optional whole yen, without grouping. Enter the cash you need.

Your card logo does not establish eligibility. Confirm the charge at the ATM. This assumption excludes issuer charges and currency conversion.

The operator says charges depend on the card brand; this reviewed page does not give one numerical fee for all foreign cards.JPY 100,000 per withdrawal; JPY 30,000 for magnetic-stripe transactions.

This count uses the published per-transaction ceiling only. Your issuer, daily allowance, ATM processing method, denomination rules, cash stock or available balance may require more withdrawals or prevent the transaction.

The calculator carries your cash amount and this dated operator context. Conversion rate and issuer charges remain for you to enter. Unknown operator charges remain blank; they are not treated as zero.

This review does not establish a card’s issuer limit, credit-card cash-advance terms, acceptance at a particular machine or an exact total debit. Check your card terms and the ATM’s final disclosure. These are published conditions, not observations from our own withdrawals.

An IC card is a separate travel balance

Prepaid IC cards are a separate spending balance. JR East’s Welcome Suica guidance describes eligible transport and purchases, with restrictions on travel between service areas. Check the exact product’s validity, top-up and refund rules before loading a large balance.

Build a yen budget from your itinerary

List accommodation that is still unpaid, transport, meals and activities separately. Subtract bookings you have already paid for. Divide only the remaining day-to-day costs by the number of days; this gives you a daily amount to enter below.

At the payment screen

If offered conversion into your home currency, compare its rate and markup with your card terms. Choosing local currency avoids that particular conversion service.

Practical questions

Can I withdraw JPY 100,000 in one transaction?

The published operator ceiling differs. Japan Post Bank states JPY 50,000. Seven Bank states JPY 100,000, reduced to JPY 30,000 for magnetic-stripe transactions. Your issuer or a particular machine can impose a lower limit; use the checked source links in the operator table.

Are ATM withdrawals free for foreign cards?

There is no single fee established by this review. Japan Post Bank lists a conditional JPY 220 charge, while the other reviewed pages describe variable charges. Your issuer may add charges. Unknown amounts stay blank in the calculator until you enter them.

Should I take only cash?

Plan both a usable card and some cash backup. Choose your cash amount from your actual itinerary and confirmed payment options, not a universal daily allowance.

Is a Suica or PASMO balance the same as my bank balance?

No. Treat a prepaid travel-card balance as a separate part of your budget and check the product’s rules before topping up.
