Keep Norwegian krone amounts distinct from Swedish kronor, recognise Norway’s sea-themed banknotes and compare your own NOK amount with PLN, USD or another currency. Check the difference between a withdrawn design and the still-valid 1,000-krone note covered by the April 2026 decision.

What does this rate mean for your amount?
Compare the same amount at the current reference quote and a historical observation. Fees and inflation are excluded. If there is no observation on the selected date, we use the preceding one, at most 4 days earlier, and show its date.
History and milestones
1875
Krone and øre become the sole currency units
The Money Act of 17 April 1875 ended the daler and skilling terminology and specified a krone divided into 100 øre. Norway joined the Scandinavian Monetary Union on 16 October that year.
On 12 December 1992 Norway abandoned the link to the European Currency Unit (ECU) and allowed the krone to float. The ECU was the predecessor of the euro.
On 29 April Norges Bank retained the 1,000-krone note as legal tender while ending new orders of that denomination from banks. A distribution decision is not the same as withdrawal of a note’s validity.
Only the listed series and motifs are reviewed here; print variants and full banknote history are not catalogued. A matching design does not confirm authenticity. Inspect security features using the issuer’s guide.
Issuer sources checked: 2026-10-12. Check the linked current conditions before requesting redemption.
Five current values, with sea motifs
The current Series VIII contains 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000-krone notes. The official catalogue identifies the lighthouse, ship, cod, rescue vessel and wave designs. Match the denomination to that guide.
Norges Bank explains watermarks, a floating ring and an anchor-chain feature. The anchor chain appears on the current denominations except the 50-krone note. Compare the correct note with the issuer’s guide rather than using one feature for every value.
The Series VII 1,000-krone note is withdrawn and ceased to be legal tender in 2020. The later wave-design note belongs to Series VIII. Identify the design before applying a headline about “the 1,000-krone note” to your own cash.
Norges Bank’s exchange page distinguishes postal requests, account transfers and eligible counter exchanges. The options and documentation depend on the request. Check the current instructions before travelling to an office or sending cash. This is redemption of withdrawn Norwegian money, not a foreign-exchange offer.
Compare the same NOK amount and payment conditions
Use the chart’s available observations to compare the same NOK amount over time. Use the offer calculator for an actual quoted rate and fees, or the trip planner for your own local costs. Neither reference history nor a sample conversion promises the amount a provider will deliver.
Practical questions
Is NOK Norwegian krone or Swedish krona?
NOK is Norwegian krone. SEK is Swedish krona. If a booking displays only “kr”, confirm its currency code before comparing it with another offer.
Did Norway make the current 1,000-krone note invalid in 2026?
No. Norges Bank’s 29 April 2026 decision kept it as legal tender. Banks cannot order new 1,000-krone notes from Norges Bank, but that does not require holders to replace valid current notes.
Can I spend the portrait-design notes from Series VII?
No. Series VII is withdrawn. Its 100 and 200-krone notes ceased to be legal tender in 2018, its 50 and 500-krone notes in 2019, and its 1,000-krone note in 2020. Check the exact denomination and design in the official catalogue.
Its published service redeems withdrawn Norwegian notes and coins; it is not a foreign-currency exchange service. For a cross-currency offer, compare a bank or exchange provider’s actual quote and all applicable fees.
It shows Polish zloty per one Norwegian krone. Enter a NOK amount to estimate its PLN reference equivalent. For an offer comparison, use the same amount and include the quoted rate and fees.
